SUPER STRONG Team Vorarlberg on the first Tour of Austria stage! Emanuel Zangerle on the podium as the most active rider – Colin Stüssi and Jannis Peter satisfied among the best

The 74th edition of the international Tour of Austria kicked off on Wednesday in Steyr with the longest stage covering 168 kilometers and 2400 meters of altitude. The field of 20 professional teams from 14 nations and numerous top stars got off to a good start in cool but mostly dry conditions. A wild “jumping race” begins. And the Vorarlberg pros were always in the thick of it. Alexander Konychev takes his first sprint classification points in Micheldorf in second place.

Radio Tour reports “three Team Vorarlberg riders in the leading group” – Emanuel Zangerle second in the mountain classification – Alexander Konychev gets involved in the sprint classification

After one hour of racing, ten riders attack. And three from Vorarlberg are among them. Pirmin Benz, Alexander Konychev and Emanuel Zangerle dominate the race at this stage. But the UAE-Emirates team keeps the group on a long leash with a lead of almost three minutes.

Emanuel Zangerle finishes third in the first mountain classification. Zangerle secured the second mountain classification in a tough sprint and is now second in the overall standings. Two points behind the Kazakh Nicolas Vinokurov from Team Astana-XDS. The last sprint classification in Steyr is secured by the duo Konychev and Zangerle! A strong performance from them today! The leading group is then caught 25 kilometers later.

Felix Großschartner wins – Colin Stüssi and Jannis Peter within striking distance – Zangerle at the podium!
A wild battle for the stage win on the Porscheberg. The UAE-Emirates XRD then took the win. Winner of the stage in Steyr and overall leader is the Austrian Felix Großschartner ahead of team colleague Rafael Majka. Colin Stüssi finishes 18th, Jannis Peter 24th, both 35 seconds behind the best. So ALL GOOD and this difficult stage is over!

Emanuel Zangerle is rewarded on the podium in Steyr with the jersey of the most active rider of the race – TOP!

O-TON Emanuel Zangerle: “I ”almost” reached my goal. I wanted the mountain jersey. Now I’ll just try again tomorrow. The team, especially Pirmin Benz and Alexander Konychev, did a great job for me today. This makes racing fun, although it has to be said that the racing here is incredibly fast. You notice the high density of top riders. But I’m also happy about the jersey of the most active rider!”

Stage no. 2 on Thursday from Bischofshofen to St. Johann Alpendorf over 142 kilometers and “only” 1677 vertical meters could be something for the fast people in the peloton. Or for a breakaway group. BUT the finale is tough. We will see!
