Calm before the storm on the eighth stage of the 85th Volta a Portugal – Lukas Rüegg comes back strong after his crash

2 august 2024

Tomas Contte from Argentina (Aviludo-Louletano) is today’s stage winner. He won the sprint of the eighth stage from Viano do Castelo over 182 kilometers to Fafe ahead of Lopez (Euskaltel). Contte was part of a larger leading group that was able to prevail today. Lukas Rüegg was also in this group, but had to let go on the last climb. A pity on the one hand, because this arrival would have been something for the fast Swiss rider. But it showed that “Luki” has recovered after his crash last week. He will be 27th today.

Team Vorarlberg leader with courage before the queen stage

Colin Stüssi wins the sprint of the peloton and finishes 28th. Before the difficult stage tomorrow, he shows courage and takes one second off the leader Eulalio Afonso (ATPF Betao). The Portuguese rider now leads by 20 seconds ahead of Colin Stüssi. The Spaniard Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi) remains third, 55 seconds behind.

Stüssi continues to lead the combined classification. He is second in the mountains classification!

Stage 9: A true royal stage – the Senhora da Graca awaits!

You don’t have to be a clairvoyant, because the profile alone, with 3800 meters of elevation gain, reveals the preliminary decision for the Tour victory. In addition to three mountain classifications, the famous “beer mountain” with crowds like at the Tour de France on Alpe d’Huez awaits Stüssi and Co. Good legs to Team Vorarlberg!
